Jupiter/Saturn Conjunction: Dec. 21, 2020

https://astronomy.com/news/sky-events/2020/12/jupiter-and-saturn-will-form-rare-christmas-star-on-winter-solstice

A series of photos on every clear night from now to Dec. 21 will show Jupiter and Saturn getting closer and closer. Jupiter and Saturn are quite low in the sky so a clear horizon is needed, e.g. looking southwest over Lake Simcoe from McRae Prov. Park, Bass Lake from Line 15 or at Carden Alvar. Best to search out a good vantage point in the daytime.

Geminid Meteor Shower

Viewing the Geminid Meteor Shower in 2020

All you need to know: 2020’s Geminid meteor shower

A cool photo is to point the camera at Gemini and take a time exposure and hope that you get the meteors radiating out from the centre of the photo. Use a wide-angle lens and a tripod. You can take an approximately 30-second exposure before the Earth’s rotation will be noticeable.

N.B. You do not have to wait until after midnight. There will be lots of shooting stars earlier in the evening but you are seeing only half of the possible meteors. However, it is almost impossible to see the whole sky anyway, so just look Southeast with Gemini at the bottom centre of your field of view.
